What is a Cultural Resource?

A cultural resource is something or someone that contributes to or has contributed to the cultural heritage of the Western Maine Lakes Region.  This includes:

  •  Individual artists, artisans and crafters.

For example, woodworkers, painters, photographers, writers, potters, musicians, storytellers, mimes, weavers, spinners, sculptors, designers, clowns, singers, composers, quilters, etc.

  •  Groups, organizations and institutions that relate to any cultural category.

These could be locally organized bands or activities at the community center or grange, for example.

  •  Groups concerned with history and/or historical preservation.

Historical societies, libraries, land trusts, etc.

  •  Performance and/or presentation related cultural groups.

Theater groups, dance troupes, garden clubs, chorales, folk singers/dancers, etc.

  •  Traditional businesses are also part of our cultural makeup.

Businesses that either use a traditional method of production and/or reflect a traditional or unique occupation in our area such as Christmas trees, maple syrup, cut stone artisans, wine makers, chain saw sculptors, etc.

  •  Places that are important to our cultural heritage.

These can be historic structures or structures associated with significant cultural events such as the Narramissic Farm in South Bridgton and Dancemore Hall in Baldwin.
