Bridgton Art Guild
and
Gallery 302

Here are a few FAQs about the new Bridgton Art Guild which was launched in the spring of 2003:

How did the Bridgton Art Guild start?
How was the name chosen?
How was the gallery space decided on?
What is the address and phone number?
How does the affiliation work with Bridgton Friends of the Arts?
Who is on the Board of Directors?
When are the meetings?
What is financially expected from the artists?
Who decides who gets to show their work?
Will jurying be used?
Will any small, fine crafts be included (such as jewelry, ceramics, etc?)
How may I join to support the work of the Bridgton Art Guild?

What do you plan for the future?

HOW DID THE BRIDGTON ART GUILD START?

George Bradt was walking his dog and got to talking with Eve Abreu about the lack of gallery space for fine art in Bridgton.  After many conversations, they said, “Let’s do it!” and they have.  They contacted all the artists they knew and held the first meeting in May.

 HOW WAS THE NAME CHOSEN?

The name was heavily discussed in the first three meetings.  It was finally put to a vote.  Bridgton Art Guild is the name of our group and Gallery 302 is the name of our gallery.  Since the vote, we have gotten a telephone at the gallery under that name, checking and savings accounts, joined the Maine Tourism Association and the Greater Bridgton Lakes Region Chamber of Commerce.

HOW WAS THE GALLERY SPACE DECIDED ON?

We looked at the following spaces for a gallery:

            - The corner of 302 & Main, owned by the Big Kahuna

            - The old Pool Hall on 302 next to the Black Horse

            - The old Hayes True Value at 38 Main.

After the majority of members toured each of these spaces, a vote was taken and Hayes True Value was selected (primarily because of foot traffic, parking, and building character).

WHAT IS THE ADDRESS AND PHONE NUMBER?

The address is 38 Main Street, Bridgton, ME 04009.  The phone is 207-647-ARTS.

HOW DOES THE AFFILIATION WORK WITH BRIDGTON FRIENDS OF THE ARTS?

Bridgton Friends of the Arts is a non-profit organization (501(c)3) that has generously allowed us to affiliate with them allowing us to enjoy the non-profit status also.  We are responsible to report our financial status to them through regular reporting.  Our treasurer, Nancy Smoak will handle this.

WHO IS ON THE BOARD OF DIRECTORS?

  • George Bradt, Co-Chair

  • Ernie Kozun, Co-Chair

  • Elna Stone, Co-Secretary

  • Lynn Harrison, Co-Secretary

  • Nancy Smoak, Treasurer

  • Beth Cossey

  • Dee DeSantis

  • Sue MacDonald

  • Tom Rines

WHEN ARE THE MEETINGS?

General meetings are currently held weekly on Thursday evenings at the Bridgton Municipal Building – 6 PM.  Board of Director meetings are also held weekly on Tuesday evenings at 7 PM, also at the Municipal Building.  We expect the frequency of both meetings to decrease after the gallery grand opening on July 25, 2003.

WHAT IS FINANCIALLY EXPECTED FROM ARTISTS?

It has been decided that this year, only paid members will be allowed to exhibit.  Membership is available for as little as $25 for the year.  Guild Membership Forms and Artist Contracts are available at all Bridgton Art Guild meetings and at Gallery 302. You may also download a Membership Form or the Exhibiting Member Artist Contract in Adobe PDF format from this website.  In addition, an exhibiting artist will pay $25 per month in advance for a 3-month period.  The gallery will take a 15% commission on all sales.

WHO DECIDES WHO GETS TO SHOW THEIR WORK?

Any paid member may exhibit.

WILL JURYING BE USED?

Jurying will not be used for our first few shows, through October 25, 2003.  It is currently undecided if it will be used in the future for all shows, or only selected shows.

WILL ANY SMALL, FINE CRAFTS BE INCLUDED (SUCH AS JEWELRY, CERAMICS, ETC.)?

No formal vote has been taken on this issue.  There is concern by many about exhibiting items that could easily be shoplifted.  Our group currently has no display cases.

HOW MAY I JOIN TO SUPPORT THE WORK OF THE BRIDGTON ART GUILD?

Guild Membership Forms are available at all Bridgton Art Guild meetings and at Gallery 302. You may also download a Guild Membership Form in Adobe PDF format from this website.

What do you plan for the future?

We expect to do many things beyond Gallery 302. Classes, workshops, studio space, educational programs, poetry readings are just a few of the offerings that have been discussed. Bring us your ideas, we will listen.
